Jaxson Dart throws early pick 6 in training camp with the Giants
Jaxson Dart has plenty of time to make a good impression, but his very first 11-on-11 pass on his first day of training camp with the New York Giants wasn’t 1 he’ll like to remember.
Call it a quick and early learning experience for the former Ole Miss star quarterback, who calmly dropped back to pass, looked left and fired a ball to the wrong guy, who had nothing but grass ahead of him. The ill-advised pick 6 by Dart got a groan from the crowd that was gathered on Wednesday morning for Day 1 of Giants’ camp in East Rutherford, N.J.
Here is the toss that got Dart’s pro career off to a bit of a rocky start:
Dart is trying to win the backup quarterback job in camp, with Giants head coach Brian Daboll proclaiming to reporters that veteran Russell Wilson is the clear-cut starting QB.
“These guys will be out here competing, but Russ is our starter,” said Daboll, according to ESPN.
Wilson is a 10-time Pro Bowler and former Super Bowl champion with the Seattle Seahawks who signed a 1-year deal with the Giants and entrenched himself as the starter during the team’s offseason workouts. That means it’ll be a battle between Dart and former Florida State star Jameis Winston for the backup job.
Dart wishes he had a do-over from that throw on Day 1, but with camp just starting, there are many days left for Dart to learn from his early mistake and nail down that backup job.
