College football has produced some exciting storylines over the past couple of weeks, so much so that it can be easy to forget at times that the NFL has also been producing some interesting threads of its own early on.
One of the most intriguing stories from the NFL ranks so far has been the resurgence of former Alabama quarterback Mac Jones with the San Francisco 49ers.
After losing the starting job in New England and spending a season with Jacksonville as a backup, Jones landed in the Bay this past offseason on a 2-year deal to serve in a similar role behind Brock Purdy.
Early injuries have forced Jones into the starting role, though, and he’s been surprisingly strong for Kyle Shanahan and San Francisco, leading them to a primetime, 26-23 win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night.
Jones threw for 342 yards and 2 touchdowns in the 49ers’ overtime victory against their division rivals, and then aced his postgame presser with flying colors.
“Brock’s the starter of this team … I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line,” Jones said when asked if he views himself as the starting quarterback for San Francisco moving forward.
Jones has always been a bit more mature than the average quarterback his age in the NFL and appears to be more than happy to play his role if it means the 49ers continue to win.
Who knows, though, a few more games like the one he just had, and he could end up netting himself another starting job elsewhere from a quarterback-needy team.
