Week 1 of the college football season might finally be here, but the NFL still has a couple of weeks to go before it kicks things off for its respective regular-season campaign. Much like in the college ranks, though, NFL teams across the map are taking these last couple of weeks before the season begins to finalize their rosters and sort out their remaining position battles.
Former South Carolina Gamecocks and Oklahoma Sooners quarterback Spencer Rattler has been embroiled in a battle for the QB1 spot down in New Orleans for the Saints, facing off against rookie second-rounder and former Louisville Cardinals standout Tyler Shough.
Things may have come down to the wire, but multiple sources are now confirming that Rattler has finally won out and will be the starter for New Orleans in week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals.
Rattler, who was a fifth-round selection by the Saints in the 2024 NFL Draft, started 6 games in his rookie season, becoming the first former Gamecock to start an NFL game since Connor Shaw did so back in 2014 for the Cleveland Browns.
Across those 6 starts, Rattler was less than stellar, putting up 1,317 passing yards, 4 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions while also completing just 57% of his passes.
With another offseason under his belt, and a new offense being installed by new head coach Kellen Moore, Rattler could be in store for a breakout campaign under center down in the Big Easy.
