Alabama freshman DB, former 5-star recruit, to have surgery on injured arm

Alabama is gearing up for a pivotal third year under coach Kalen DeBoer, as the team is looking for another appearance in the College Football Playoff. On Monday, the Crimson Tide got some bad news as defensive back Jireh Edwards suffered a right arm injury that will require surgery.
The injury isn’t expected to be season-ending, but there is no timetable for his return. It is tough news for the Crimson Tide, as Edwards was putting together a very good summer camp. Just last week, defensive coordinator Kane Wommack said that Edwards would find time on the field. He isn’t the first big-time freshman defensive back to suffer an injury, as Jorden Edmonds, another 5-star, will miss the start of the season due to a lower-body injury.
While they will both be missed, if there is one position the Crimson Tide can survive, it is the secondary. The safety duo of Bray Hubbard and Keon Sabb is as good as there is in college football. Combine that with the talent at the cornerback position, and Alabama has the makings of the best secondary in the NCAA.
Alabama will open the 2026 season on Sept. 5 at home against East Carolina.
