Ever since Miami debuted its turnover chain, sideline props have become all the rage in college football.
At the JUCO level, Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College wanted a chainsaw on the sideline for its game against Jones College. The refs, however, weren’t having it, as you can see in the video below.
A referee told MGCCC senior defensive tackle Brian Merritt, โYโall canโt bring that out here. Donโt bring out that saw.โ
Another ref remarked, โOne of us has been doing this 30 years and havenโt seen something like that.โ
Patrick Magee of The Sun Herald shares that it is actually not a new thing for MGCCC. It has been carried onto the field to start games for the last two seasons (with other officiating crews, apparently).
โWe run a blitz called, โSaw,โโ MGCCC coach Jack Wright told Magee. โItโs a pretty risky blitz, I guess you could say. You donโt leave a lot of help on the back end. Weโve got the kids sold on thatโs the greatest defense we can run.
โItโs kind of taken on a life of its own over the last two years. Our kids love (the chainsaw). It brings a lot of energy and I think itโs unique. Anything that gives the kids a little boost before the game, Iโm all for it.โ
Wright was amused by the refs’ reactions.
โMaybe we should have asked permission, but sometimes itโs better off not asking and doing it anyway,โ he said.
Gulf Coast defeated Jones 35-8.
The referees at MGCCC vs Jones wouldnโt let the Bulldogs bring our their chainsaw. 😂
โYโall canโt bring that out hereโ
I asked the refs about it right before the coin toss.
