Bill Belichick is at North Carolina and working on his first-ever coaching staff at Chapel Hill. According to reports, one spot is going to his son, Steve Belichick, though that should not come as a surprise.

Matt Zenitz with CBS Sports reported on Sunday that Steve will join his father’s coaching staff as the new defensive coordinator for the Tar Heels. The younger Belichick currently serves as the DC for Jedd Fisch at Washington and is expected to make the move after the bowl game for the Huskies.

Though the move is not surprising, it’s certainly a blow to Fisch’s staff. He hired Belichick to his initial staff at Washington after making the move from Arizona, and the results were quick and easy to see in Seattle.

Reuniting with his dad in Chapel Hill only seemed like a matter of time for Steve, especially with reports surrounding Bill’s negotiations with UNC. According to one report, Bill requested a contract clause that Steve be named the head-coach-in-waiting for whenever Bill steps aside, and the indications were that the Tar Heels were willing to meet that request.

It will not be the first time the father and son duo has worked together. Steve joined his father’s New England Patriots staff in 2012 as a defensive assistant and eventually held different roles as a safeties coach, a defensive backs coach and an outside linebackers coach through the 2023 season.

As for Washington, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported a bit of good news that Fisch is not expecting any other changes to his coaching staff with the Huskies this offseason. Thamel also indicated Washington has already spoken with multiple candidates about the DC post and will move quickly in filling the post.
