The narrative around Notre Dame following the 31-14 loss in the Rose Bowl College Football Playoff semifinal was that the Fighting Irish have worn out their welcome in big games, at least according to many college football fans.

The Fighting Irish are now 0-7 in either BCS or New Year’s Six bowl games, a stat that goes back to a blowout loss to Oregon State in 2000. Notre Dame has been outscored by 161 points in those games as well, with the closest loss being by 14 points.

Asked about the margin of defeat in several games at the post-game press conference, coach Brian Kelly did not appreciate the line of questioning.

“This wasn’t a matter of not getting knocked off the ball or not having enough players to compete against Alabama,” he said, per Pete Sampson of The Athletic. “I’m sorry if you don’t like it and if the national media doesn’t like it but we’re going to go back to work and we’re going to put ourselves back in this position again.”

About how Notre Dame responds going forward, Kelly said, “We came up short with the fire power. There is not wider story than with with the fire power and making a few more plays.”
