Urban Meyer knows all about dealing with heated fans after coaching at Florida and Ohio State before launching into his broadcasting career. Now, he’s basking in the national championship victory for Ryan Day and those Buckeyes, calling out certain segments of those fans who recently wanted Day gone.

During an episode of “The Triple Option” podcast, Meyer called out the “idiots” on social media who went so far as to involve Day’s family. It was revealed after the national championship that Day’s family required armed protection in the wake of a 4th straight loss to Michigan.

“A lot has been made of it, of Coach Day and the pressures of coaching at a place like Ohio State,” Meyer said. “And I made a comment that’s not going to change. The thing that’s got to change — and has changed — is the idiots on social media that don’t sign their name to stuff. And when you start involving families, you’re pushing it too far…

“Booing because you don’t get first downs and you lose to the rival? That’s part of the game. But, you got to keep the families out of it.”

During his conversation, Meyer admitted he never understood the weight and dynamics of a high-profile program until he wound up at Florida during a time that the fanbase wanted Steve Spurrier back at the helm. After losing to South Carolina, Meyer felt the weight of that scenario in “a strange land” for his time as a coach.

“I really didn’t understand the dynamic until I got there, and I got there, and I’ll never forget — (Spurrier) goes to South Carolina — we lose to South Carolina, which you don’t do that at Florida,” said Meyer. “I walk in to do my radio show on a Thursday, and I am the most miserable human being. I’m a stranger in a strange land down South there, and I come walking in and they boo me. I’m 7-2, I think, at the time.”

Meyer was also not immune to the previously discussed “lunatic fringe” of Ohio State fans that Kirk Herbstreit referenced recently. The former head coach said his family had to have protection at times after “nut job fans” would say things about his family, including his daughters.

“Just nut job fans would say things about my girls or something, and we’d have police come 24/7 around the house a few times — just because you’re in the public eye,” Meyer said.

At least for now, Meyer and Day will relish in an epic title for Ohio State, but there is always the need for certain segments of fans to take a reality check before hitting “send” with their comments.
