Brent Venables is reportedly taking another former Clemson colleague with him to Oklahoma, and giving him a promotion.
Venables has hired Tigers defensive tackles coach Todd Bates for the same position in Norman, according to Tigers Illustrated’s Larry Williams. Bates also served as Clemson’s recruiting coordinator and as an assistant head coach.
Bates earned 3 letters at Alabama as a defensive end from 2001-04, and was a permanent co-captain in 2004. He was named Clemson’s recruiting coordinator after the 2019 season, and previously coached at Jacksonville State (2014-16) before he joined the Clemson staff in 2017. He was also an assistant at Idaho State in 2011 and 2012, then at East Central Junior College in Mississippi in 2013.
