Oklahoma wide receiver JJ Hester is entering the transfer portal, Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer of CBS Sports and 247Sports learned on Tuesday.
Hester, a redshirt senior, had 14 catches for 315 yards and 1 touchdown this season for the 6-6 Sooners, but he will now reportedly be looking to finish his college career somewhere else. Hester’s receiving yardage total was second on the team only to tight end Bauer Sharp, who is also in the portal.
The 6-foot-4, 200-pound Hester played a prominent role in the Sooners’ passing game after injuries swept across the wide receiver room this fall. Prior to his 3 seasons with the Sooners, Hester spent 2 years at Missouri.
Hester was a redshirt senior this year after he used his redshirt during his freshman season at Missouri in 2020. He only appeared in 3 games for the Sooners in 2022 before missing the rest of the year due to injury, and Hester also missed most of last season because of injury.
It is unclear if Hester will apply for a medical redshirt, or look to use his redshirt in 2022 since the 2020 season doesn’t have to count against his eligibility due to the COVID-19 exemption.
No matter how Hester plays it, he’ll have just 1 year of eligibility remaining. Hester joins fellow wide receivers Jaquaize Pettaway and Nic Anderson, who are also reportedly entering the transfer portal.
