Multiple options are being discussed in order to play the 2020 college football season. The season could start on time, or it could be delayed. It could also start without fans in the stands, but Lane Kiffin doesn’t even want to entertain that one.

During an interview with WNML-FM in Knoxville this week, Kiffin said that a conversation of playing in empty stadiums is a waste of time.

“I think that’s a waste of time in my opinion, that conversation,” Kiffin said.

“If it’s not safe for people to be around people, you’re not going to play football,” Kiffin continued. “You can’t have 120 kids on one sideline around each other. Probably 250 people when it comes to all the staff and student managers. It’s not going to happen. You can’t have that many people around each other.

“(Players are) going to go separate places and see people throughout, at night or on weekends or whatever. I know people talk about that, but I think that’s a waste of time. I don’t know how that would ever happen.”

The sentiment seems to be by the end of May leaders will need to make decisions about the 2020 season.

ESPN’s Chris Fowler said one idea that is gaining a little steam would be to play a winter and spring season beginning at some point in February.

“There is a third scenario that’s gaining momentum, which may sound preposterous on the surface but I think a lot of reasonable people feel like it might be the most prudent course of action, and that is football in the spring,” Fowler said. “Beginning some point in February, getting into March, April, May, maybe have the postseason in June. That would have to be reshuffled a bit, it would be bizarre, it would wreak havoc on some other sports in that time of year, but to avoid the financial disaster of having no football in the academic year, I think it might be a fallback position.”

The good news is the peak of the COVID-19 outbreak may be behind the United States, but folks are worried about the potential of a second-wave.

Either way, we should know in about a month and a half what the 2020 season looks like.
