Ole Miss has landed a transfer pledge from former South Alabama safety Yam Banks.

The 6-foot-1, 208-pound defensive back revealed his commitment on social media Sunday afternoon. He was a first-team all-conference safety for the Jaguars during the 2022 season and then a third-team all-league pick this season. A Ridgeland native, Banks comes to Ole Miss with one season of eligibility remaining.

Banks spent four years at South Alabama, where he first began as a cornerback. He played in seven games during the COVID-altered 2020 campaign — his first with South Alabama. He had a small role, but immediately stepped into a featured role the following season. He played in 12 games while recording 49 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, two pass breakups, and two forced fumbles.

In 2022, he enjoyed his best season. Banks produced 50 tackles to go with six TFLs, 17 pass breakups, and six interceptions. Pro Football Focus gave Banks the fifth-best coverage grade among all qualified Group of Five cornerbacks.

This past season, Banks made the move from cornerback to safety. He recorded 46 tackles, 5.5 TFLs, four pass breakups, an interception, and another forced fumble.

Banks becomes the 15th known transfer commit to join the Rebels during the winter cycle. He’s also the fifth defensive back to join what is the top-ranked transfer class in the country.
