After the last conference realignment, Maryland is technically Big Ten territory, but one of the stop’s top recruits is showing a strong interest in playing in the SEC. National Christian Academy DE Monkell Goodwine recently revealed a top five of Tennessee, Alabama, Texas A&M, LSU and Oklahoma to John William Perry.

The Fort Washington, Maryland, native is listed at 6-4, 260 pounds and rated 4-stars, the No. 5 recruit in the state, No. 9 strong-side defensive end and No. 114 prospect overall in the 2021 class on the 247Sports Composite. Last spring, he participated in “The Opening Regional” and recorded a 4.88-second 40-yard dash, 4.51-second shuttle time, 23.20-inch vertical, and a 78.50-inch wingspan.

247Sports evaluator Brian Dohn sees Goodwine as a potential NFL draftee:

Strong frame with low build. Can play defensive end at 265 pounds. Could move inside in college with weight gain. Good length. Plays with low pad level. Possesses closing speed. Good body control and strong tackler. Gets off at snap quickly. Covers a lot of ground in first three steps. Plays with energy and purpose. Has backside pursuit ability. Has to work on disengaging and red-directing down line of scrimmage. Development of technique important so not as reliant on speed and power. Needs to play more physical at point of attack. Multi-year starter at top 20 program. Could develop into a Day 3 NFL draft pick.
