Vanderbilt head coach Derek Mason is refreshing in more ways than one.

Mason has been known to say what’s on his mind and not sugarcoat answers to questions.

On Wednesday during the SEC Coaches’ Teleconference, Mason was asked whether Alabama or Georgia is the better team, and while many coaches would dodge the question or just laud both teams, Mason answered it sincerely.

“Having played both teams, Alabama’s the better team … I think the difference is in the secondary,” Mason said.

He also added, “Georgia is being built like Alabama.”

The honesty is refreshing, isn’t it?

And Mason would know, because his Commodores played both teams.

Alabama beat Vanderbilt 59-0, while Georgia beat the Commodores 45-14. Both teams looked dominant against a pretty good Commodores’ defense.

The Crimson Tide and Bulldogs appear to be on a collision course for the SEC Championship Game. Ranked No. 1 and No. 3 respectively, the SEC could theoretically make history as the first conference with two teams in the College Football Playoff.
