Big 12 expansion could be happening again in the near future.

According to a report from college football insider John Canzano, the Big 12 has had conversations with Fresno State about potentially joining the league. Per Canzano’s report, Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark has had multiple conversations with Fresno State president Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval.

Canzano also says that the Pac-12 has not had much contact with the Bulldogs. Here’s an excerpt from his report:

Keep an eye on Fresno State as an addition to the Big 12 Conference. I’m told the Pac-12 has only had “intermittent” contact with the Bulldogs. No visit. Nothing planned. I don’t think the presidents and chancellors — especially the ones a few hours away in the Bay Area — in the Pac-12 view Fresno as a “must have.”

This report comes just a day after Canzano said that the Pac-12 is keeping Boise State at “arm’s length.” The Pac-12 is reportedly more interested in adding schools like San Diego State and SMU to its conference.

If the Big 12 and/or Pac-12 do add any programs in the coming months, it would be the first major expansion move since USC and UCLA announced their intentions to move to the Big Ten in 2022.

The Big 12 is set to officially add 4 new members in 2023: Cincinnati, UCF, BYU and Houston. Oklahoma and Texas will depart for the SEC in 2024.
