Charlotte fires head coach, tabs former SEC assistant as interim HC
The Charlotte 49ers are making a change at head coach with 2 games remaining. Biff Poggi has been fired after the 49ers suffered their 7th loss in Week 12.
Poggi compiled a 6-16 record during his tenure in Charlotte. The 49ers finished 2023 with a 3-9 record and are currently 3-7 with games against FAU and UAB remaining. Former SEC assistant Tim Brewster will serve as the interim HC.
Brewster, 64, was Minnesota’s head coach from 2007-10, going 15-30. Following his time with the Gophers, he bounced around as an assistant, including stops at Mississippi State (2012), Texas A&M (2018) and Florida (2020-21).
Charlotte has struggled on both sides of the ball in 2024. The team sports the No. 116 total offense and the No. 117 total defense in FBS. The team’s lone wins came against Gardner-Webb, Rice, and East Carolina.
Poggi was hired by Charlotte ahead of the 2023 season after serving as associate HC at Michigan for the previous 2 seasons. The experienced coach cut his teeth coaching high school in the Baltimore area, and Charlotte was his first college HC job.
Charlotte athletic director Mike Hill released the following statement about the decision:
“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” Hill said. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender.”
Charlotte will now look for their 4th HC since joining the FBS in 2015. The school has made 1 bowl game in that time and sports a 48-101 all-time record.
