Fox Sports radio host Colin Cowherd is on the side of playoff expansion in college football, and he believes it will happen in two years.

But who will be the teams in the mix to dominate in that timeframe and beyond? He explains here.

That expansion talk caused him to make the comparison to basketball and March Madness, and Cowherd’s point is even though there are 68 teams in college basketball, there are still only about six that are in contention most years.

That’s why he put Clemson, Alabama, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Georgia, Notre Dame, Oregon and Florida to be those contending teams in college football. For Clemson, it’s because Dabo Swinney doesn’t lose assistant coaches, while Alabama does, even though Nick Saban is the best overall architect of a program.

Cowherd sees the Big Ten as better than the ACC, but Ohio State and Clemson largely don’t have a lot of threats to unseat those top teams.

For Georgia, Cowherd puts Kirby Smart a level down from the likes of Saban, Swinney or Lincoln Riley, but it may be the best or second best job in college football. The state of Georgia, he said, may be the best recruiting state per capita in the country.

At No. 8, Cowherd put Florida in over Texas A&M because he likes Dan Mullen or Jimbo Fisher and Florida is a more exciting place for recruits.
