Cal McNeill won’t be a popular man around Albuquerque after he mixed up the local university for its rival, New Mexico State.

When he announced a timeout by New Mexico in the first quarter in the game against Utah State on Friday, McNeill referred to the Lobos as “New Mexico State.” As boos rained down on him during the announcement, he stopped mid-sentence and apologized while he hung his head.

The Lobos are having a tough go of it in the game against Utah State, as they trailed 28-0. The season isn’t much better as their record sat at 3-8 entering the week.

The Lobos haven’t scored more than 17 points in any of their last 9 games, and the lone victory during that stretch was a 14-3 decision over Wyoming in Laramie on Oct. 23.
