This is a move we didn’t see coming.

After 11 seasons with Marshall, Doc Holliday has announced the school has not extended his contract beyond the 2020 season.

Incredibly, Holliday was named Conference USA Coach of the Year in 2020. Now he’s out of a job.

This news comes after Holliday averaged eight wins a season during his final four seasons with Marshall and led the program to a bowl game in each of those years. Overall, Holliday went 85-54 at Marshall with eight bowl appearances in his 11 seasons with the program.

Marshall went 7-3 overall this season and 4-1 in Conference USA games in 2020.

According to Yahoo Sports Pete Thamel, the decision to move on from Holliday didn’t come from Marshall’s AD.

“Sources: The decision to remove Doc Holliday at Marshall came from above the athletic director’s head, as it was orchestrated by the governor and board. Holliday made four-straight bowl games and eight in 10 years,” Thamel reported on Monday.

Here is the statement Holliday issued on Monday to share the news of his departure from the program.
