ESPN’s Michael Wilbon often believes there are narratives involved in some of the biggest stories in sports. He usually saves this kind of opinion for the NFL about quarterbacks. But this time it was for the College Football Playoff and the SEC.

Speaking on The Tony Kornheiser Show podcast, Wilbon said there is a “drumbeat” for two SEC teams, and it will be decided over the next month between Alabama, Georgia and LSU.

Wilbon: “They’re going to take two SEC teams because that’s what the drumbeat is.”

Kornheiser: “Really, you think they will?”

Wilbon: “Of course they will.”

Kornheiser: “So you think the loser of LSU-Alabama will get in as well, if the winner beats Georgia?”

Wilbon: “Well, that’s a big if. I just think two SEC teams will be in. I think it’ll be the winner of LSU-Alabama, and one other team, whether it’s Georgia or the loser. I think that’ll be the case and I think Clemson, Ohio State will round it out. … Tony, I tried to watch Oregon, my son is an Oregon fanatic, mostly because of the uniforms. … I don’t if Oregon, which is a one-loss team ranked, what, seven, I believe? … I guess Oregon could still make it. I don’t know about Oregon/Utah. I don’t know how that works, what the pollsters and analytics say.”

The good news is the first CFP rankings reveal will shed some light on this discussion. It is set for 9 p.m. on Tuesday on ESPN.
