Gene Chizik looks to be leaving the SEC Network for a return to the sidelines, but for a different team than originally reported. According to FootballScoop, Chizik will be the next defensive coordinator at North Carolina.

This news comes after Chizik was reported to be taking a head coaching and general manager position with the USFL’s Birmingham Stallions. Thursday, he called the reports a rumor and said nothing was final.

Chizik, 60, last coached at North Carolina as defensive coordinator in 2016. The Tar Heels were then led by head coach Larry Fedora. Chizik’s return to UNC reunites him with current head coach Mack Brown. At Texas, Chizik was Brown’s defensive coordinator in 2005, the year the Longhorns won the BCS, and 2006.

Chizik, a former Florida linebacker, was a head coach from 2007-12 at Iowa State and Auburn, leading the Tigers to the 2010 national title.
