5-star Georgia QB Gunner Stockton announces his college commitment
Say what you will about Will Muschamp’s inconsistent tenure at South Carolina but the Gamecock coach has landed some elite quarterbacks during his time running the program in Columbia.
While South Carolina has landed several high school All-American signal-callers under Muschamp’s leadership, the Gamecocks may have just landed the best one yet — and they beat out Georgia to do it.
Five-star prospect Gunner Stockton, the nation’s No. 1 dual-threat quarterback in the 2022 recruiting cycle, just announced his commitment to South Carolina over Georgia. 247Sports Composite Rankings list Stockton as the No. 30 overall recruit in the 2022 recruiting cycle.
The Tiger, Ga., native follows in the footsteps of Luke Doty (rated as a four-star prospect and a top 100 overall player in the 2020 cycle), Ryan Hilinski (rated as the No. 2 pro-style passer and a top 100 prospect in the 2019 cycle), Dakereon Joyner (rated as a four-star QB in the 2018 cycle) and Brandon McIlwain and Jake Bentley (both four-star prospects in the 2016 recruiting cycle).
Stockton is the first commitment to pledge to South Carolina’s 2022 recruiting class.
To see why the Georgia native is such a touted prospect, check out his sophomore season highlights with Rabun County below.
Nice pick up for South Carolina. Not sure why he’d tie his hip to Muschamp, though. The only QBs who have made it to the NFL under him needed to transfer to get good QB coaching.
Perhaps pre-Bobo, he of Stafford Murray Greene pedigree
We’ll see what he does when Mushchamp gets fired after this season.
I don’t think anybody will get fired this season. Coaches get a free year as well as the players.
Unless it’s for something non-football performance related.
I wonder what possibly goes on during those recruiting chats. There’s so little to sell in a Muschamp offense.
Bobo and two suitcases…heck I’d make the deal…
This would definitely be the biggest trending article on SDS had he committed to UGA or another bigger brand school lol
No doubt. That’s the way this site works.
It’s like the writers/editors think their audience is too dumb to notice, they don’t even rlly try to hide it.
It is a little disappointing. I’ve detected serious animosity towards Muschamp from the senior editor of the site, so I’m sure that belittles the accomplishment a bit.
I’m not saying the Bobo hire is a sure thing, but they refuse to acknowledge that a coach who’s been accused of not giving his OCs enough control hiring an experienced playcaller that he has a long history with could potentially help the situation. If we can keep Muschamp with a 5-5 record this season, I think this program is gonna prove a lot of people wrong in the following years.
If Will really leaves Bobo alone, they should have some good years down the road. In any case, Bowl Cut got schooled again. I know that this is the Common Bama line on Get Smart, but I’m so glad to see it happen.
cocky…that’s because your fans rarely post on any article that features South Carolina news. You seem to have that poor-poor pitiful me attitude…such an inferiority complex. Put something positive in your life…It works !
What an arrogant response from a fan of the team with the most arrogant fan base in CFB history. Pathetic.
I have to agree.
What does my ‘attitude’ have to do with biased journalism. Get a hobby other than spamming gamecock articles, must b a closeted clemsux fan
cocky…I detest datboi at Clempson. He’s a total fake. You are 1000% wrong on that one. As I told a friend once…I don’t wish Clempson any bad luck…I just hope they never win another football game.
Maybe they do inject positivity into their lives. Perhaps with things other than football?
I replied to you on another article – we don’t post due to the overwhelming negative articles that we’ve read before! We rarely jump into the GA-FL or AL-AU back and forth because those are other teams rivals and crap talk. There are enough ignorant comments without any of us contributing!
It’s the biggest trending article now. Give it time.
Congrats CootU, kid looks very impressive already. The Mike Bobo affect is already paying dividends it appears…
I wonder if Muschamp will allow him to actually handle the offense? Odds are that will not be the case.
They’re both Georgia boyz, Muschamp will turn the reins over, Bobo is a proven OC, we sure missed him when he left for Colorado
Bobo will have a brain cramp in a particularly crucial moment. It is his style.
detail the Bobo effect for us, please.
Affect comes first alphabetically, and is an action (to affect) that has to occur before you can have a result (an effect)..per internet vocabulary.
Bobo affect is the premise of a more explosive and creative offense which in time it’s effect will be known…are you as confused as I am now? (:
Don’t worry about wolfman…he’s a Mizzou fan.
I would take Bobo over Duawelly as an OC any day, imagine that Josh Heupel is the only good OC your team has seen in well over a decade. Now you know how it feels.
Look up Aaron Murray.
Say what you want about Bobo but he gets some highly rated QBs to commit. Stafford, Murray, Mettenberger just to name a few. He was also involved early in the recruitment of Jacob Eason. I think the “Bobo affect” is just stating that he’ll bring in a higher level of QB to USCjr.
So many elite QBs out of Georgia
Well congrats for SCAR. I guess. Hope the kid knows what he’s doing.
He was mentored by Connor Shaw, plays for Shaw’s brother, was taught football as a kid by Bono’s dad, and has been family friends with the Bobo’s for years. He knows our program as well as a prospect possibly could without a parent coaching the team.
That makes a lot more sense why he’s committed to SC, then. Just a bit odd that he could go anywhere he wants and he picks SC, but hey, it’s his decision not mine.
Many others should follow his lead. I guess all the other successful SEC teams would rather not have good/great players coming to Carolina. I’m sure we’re the subject of a lot of negative recruiting so maybe the foundation that Coach Muschamp is building will pay off. That is if the administration and a few of the more vocal commenters don’t run him off!!
Connor Shaw’s brother coaches him in High School AND the Bobo connection he already had made this a USCe lock long ago.
Is Muschamp even going to get to be his coach?
No he will not.
Yes he will. As others have said on this site, this season is essentially a 10 game scrimmage. No program is firing their coaches with this much financial loss on a season.
Muschamp will survive. Landing the nations #1 dual threat QB is a big deal. That gives SC four 5-star players on its roster in 2022. Not sure that’s ever happened in Columbia.
Ranger…Congratulations on this committment. Even though has has a history with both Mike Bobo & Connor Shaw…his decision to come to South Carolina is a real head-scratcher for everyone except garnet-Kool Aid drinkers.
Did cocky sleep w/ ur wife or something?
Muschump can recruit well but can he coach offense or develop offensive players? So far not really. It seems it all hangs on Bobo but we have seen this movie before, keep changing OCs when the problem is the HC
Turd nation really does know how to change coaches, that’s for sure.
After UGA spanks the turds aasses again this year how long will you stay off the SDS blogs? What was your hiatious last fall – 30 days, 45, 60 days?
Correct me is I’m wrong but didn’t Turd Nation spank that puppy aas last year? That’s right. They did.
Bobo is far and away the best OC that Musfchamp has had. I think they will be much better in a couple of years.
Will does not have a couple of years…this is it for him. Playing only SEC games this year, it’s gonna get nasty early for the Cocks. 2/8 or 3/7 maybe.
I don’t understand your hard-on for hating Will Muschamp. He’s just a mediocre SEC coach. Your condescending responses to Gamecocks fans is embarrassing. Just congratulate the Gamecocks on a great recruiting victory and move on.
Good for SC. Mike Bobo is a good QB coach. Hopefully he’ll have success at SC.
Blep…I did congratulate them on a great commit…You must have missed it…then merely stated that it seemed to be a head-scratcher.
Good get for SCar.
Give Muschamp and Bobo a couple of seasons and they’ll own UF.
Sure just like Tennessee, Miami, FSU, and UCF. Did I forget anyone on your list Nostradumba$$
Muschamp and SCar just did something mullet has never done – got a 5- star QB commitment.
Muschamp just took a body shot with their 5* running back lost for the season. I don’t think SC has much else in the cupboard at the position. Really, the guy can’t catch a break with injuries since he got there. Unlike Bama, who has had their share as well he relies much more on the few difference-makers he has on his team. Their schedule looks brutal, so it makes you wonder how long they are going to ride this pony. If I’m SC I let this experiment rock on for at least 2 more seasons. The guy recruits like a rock star.
Real unfortunate injury, but we have 2 solid returning backs and a Juco all American who just enrolled. Silver lining is we get an extra season w/ Lloyd and Stockton in the backfield, that’s championship level talent.
whoa nellie. 2022 is a ways off and lets see if this sticks. Also, they’ll need blocking and receivers and have little if any right now. Good foundation sure, but championships….hardly.
“How long are they going to ride this pony”
Shy a program meltdown you have to give Bobo a chance to fix the offense. Geez, they just got a 5-star QB committ. Without Bobo they don’t get that commitment. Has SCar ever signed a 5- Star QB?
Then, if you fire Muschamp who do you hire? SCar is not a “5-star” destination for coaches.
As long as Muschamp can show progress they have to keep him.
Which is why I suggested, “at least 2 more seasons.” Based on his recruiting prowess alone.
agreed
When South Carolina finally fires Will(they would have in 2019 except for a $13 Million buyout)…they should hire a head coach named Scott Satterfield(now at Louisville). He’s the guy that built the Appy State program that came to S.C. last year and dominated the Cocks. His offenses score something called touchdowns, a lot of em.
