In less than 2 weeks, the face of college football rosters will begin to drastically change with the official opening of the NCAA transfer portal.

Key word: official.

Because when you’re talking about transfer players of impact — specifically, the critical quarterback position — there is no start date.

“There are schools making deals with (quarterbacks) at other schools right now,” a Power 5 coach told me this week. “This is the (NIL) world we live in.”

As of today, only 1 quarterback of significance has declared: former Boise State starter Hank Bachmeier, who announced in late September his intention to transfer.

The portal opens on Dec. 5, and is open for 45 days until Jan. 18, 2023. Once the portal closes, a player cannot enter the portal again until the next 15-day period (May 1-15).

Once a player enters the portal, he can transfer at any time. It’s not a coincidence that the portal periods directly align with the end of the regular season, and the end of spring practice.

A look at the top 10 potential quarterback transfers for the 2023 season:

1. DJ Uiagalelei, Clemson

The skinny: Has played much better this season than given credit for (27 total TDs, 6 INTs), and has done so with a distinct drop in talent/production from Clemson receivers and the offensive line over the past 2 seasons.

Is he an elite player? Probably not. But he’s a quality starter who may just have his best season when he gets away from Clemson. The Tigers are stacking up 5-star quarterbacks, and someone has to go.

The perfect fit: UCLA.

2. Sam Hartman, Wake Forest

The skinny: A wildly underrated career at Wake Forest, Hartman needs 4 TD passes to be the ACC’s all-time leader at 108. He’ll be 24 years old by the time next season begins, and if he doesn’t leave for the NFL, will be the most coveted QB transfer in the 2023 class.

Throws a beautiful, catchable ball and is a fiery leader. The perfect combination for a program desperate for leadership and talent at the position.

The perfect fit: Florida.

3. Tyler Van Dyke, Miami

The skinny: Went from 1 of the top 5 returning quarterbacks in 2022, and an NIL deal with a $90,000 car, to getting benched and falling out of favor with the new Miami staff. Now what?

He’s not leaving for the NFL because his stock has slipped and because it’s a deep quarterback draft. He has 2 options: Work it out with the Miami staff (doubtful) or transfer (probable).

The perfect fit: Notre Dame.

4. Quinn Ewers, Texas

The skinny: Has shown a unique skill set, but hasn’t been consistent and has struggled with accuracy. You can’t complete 55 percent of your passes and be successful in college football.

The talent is clearly there, but so is heralded recruit Arch Manning in January. Like current backup Hudson Card, Ewers seems primed to transfer (this transfer for Ewers, unlike his move this season from Ohio State, will cost 1 year of eligibility).

The perfect fit: TCU.

5. Shedeur Sanders, Jackson State

The skinny: The former 4-star recruit has 70 total TDs in 2 seasons at Jackson State, and is the most dynamic player at the FCS level. He was a big recruit 2 years ago and signed with Jackson State to play with his dad, Tigers coach Deion Sanders.

Alabama recruited Sanders hard in high school, and likely will again if he enters the portal. But there’s only one place Sanders is headed if he leaves Jackson State.

The perfect fit: Wherever Deion Sanders takes an FBS job (if he takes one).

6. Jeff Sims, Georgia Tech

The skinny: Maybe the most misused quarterback in the country. A load of talent, but stuck in a bad system — with a now-fired former head coach desperately trying to find a way out of the muck for much of the past 2 years.

A dangerous dual-threat, Sims has 41 total TDs and hasn’t played this season since spraining his foot vs. Virginia on Oct. 20. He has been sacked 51 times in 24 career games.

The perfect fit: Arkansas.

7. Phil Jurkovec, Boston College

The skinny: Back-to-back seasons with injuries have crushed Jurkovec’s once-hot NFL stock. Add to that, his backup at BC (Emmett Morehead) has played well, and now it’s clearly time to go.

A big, strong pocket passer, Jurkovec can make all the throws and would be an experienced and calming force on any team.

The perfect fit: Minnesota.

8. Garrett Nussmeier, LSU

The skinny: Battled Jayden Daniels for the starting job in spring practice and fall camp, and just missed out on winning the job. Has a live arm, and isn’t close to reaching his huge upside.

He’s in a numbers crunch at LSU. Daniels will likely stay another year, and freshman 5-star Walker Howard isn’t going anywhere. LSU also has a quarterback committed to this signing class, and a mega quarterback recruit committed to the 2024 class.

The perfect fit: Auburn.

9. Cade McNamara, Michigan

The skinny: Led Michigan to an unbeaten regular season and a Big Ten championship in 2021, 13 straight wins in 1 season for the first time in school history.

He’s not going to wow you with physical ability or a big arm, he just makes smart plays and protects the ball. He’s accurate, and a willing, tough runner.

The perfect fit: Arizona State.

10. Luke Altmyer, Ole Miss

The skinny: Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin’s first major quarterback recruit, Altmyer was thrown into the fire during last year’s Sugar Bowl (against a strong Baylor defense) and didn’t respond well.

Competed with starter Jaxson Dart in fall camp and nearly won the job. Strong arm, good size, ready to play.

The perfect fit: Kentucky.
