That didn’t take very long.

After just one weekend of action, there is a new head coach at Southern Miss.

According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports, after failing to show up for work on Monday to coach the Eagles, head coach Jay Hopson has stepped down from his position at the school. Thamel is also reporting that Southern Miss offensive coordinator Scotty Walden has been named as the team’s interim head coach.

News of Hopson’s pending departure at Southern Miss was first reported Sunday evening by Southern Miss Rivals site, Big Gold Nation.

Southern Miss lost its season opener over the weekend to South Alabama, 32-21. The game was South Alabama’s first road win since 2017.

During his four seasons (and one game during the 2020 season) at Southern Miss, Hopson’s overall record at the school was 28-23.
