Kirk Herbstreit has joined the chorus in calling for a national commissioner, something like Roger Goodell is with the NFL, to oversee college football.

During an interview with Sean Salisbury on Sportstalk 790 Houston, Herbstreit said the problem with how college football has unfolded in recent years is that regional interests are the only thing that matter. He said all of the conference commissioners are worried about their own backyard and constituents.

“They don’t give a crap about what’s going on in a different conference,” Herbstreit said. “That’s the problem. We need to have one guy, like Roger Goodell, who’s in charge of the entire sport. If we’re going to cheer and watch this sport, and it’s about the nation, we can no longer govern this sport regionally, and that’s what we’re doing. Until they change that, it’s not going to get fixed.”

Another option would be if football pulled out of the NCAA and created its own governing body. Or, there could be a commissioner who partners with a collective bargaining association of players.

“What we are doing now from a leadership role is not working, nobody trusts anybody,” Herbstreit said. “And we’re not going to be able to step forward, and that’s my biggest concern right now, as we try to deal with all this change is, who’s in charge, because it’s not the NCAA, and it’s not (SEC Commissioner) Greg Sankey. These guys are all worried about their own conference. Nobody’s looking out over the totality of the sport. So we’ve got to find an answer to that if we’re going to have any hope for having a future with this sport.”
