LSU and South Carolina’s marquee matchup was the most-watched sporting event nationwide on Thursday, according to a report.

That’s per Sports Media Watch, who reported an average audience of 1.56 million people watched South Carolina take down defending-national champion LSU on the road on Thursday night. The Gamecocks won 76-70 thanks to a dominant 4th-quarter performance on the road.

South Carolina’s dramatic win over LSU out-drew both primetime NBA games that were broadcast on TNT on Thursday, including a Celtics-Heat game that was in the same time slot.

Per the report, this was the second most-watched regular-season women’s college basketball game since 2010 (trailing only Ohio State’s overtime win over Caitlin Clark and Iowa last week).

South Carolina and LSU have combined to win the last 2 national championships in women’s hoops. This was a top-10 battle between a pair of programs that have Final Four aspirations once again in 2024. With the win, South Carolina now has a 2-game lead over LSU in the loss column for the SEC regular season title.

This is the only scheduled meeting for South Carolina and LSU during the regular season. However, the 2 programs could meet again in the SEC Tournament or the NCAA Tournament at the end of the year.
