Mike Leach not only lived up to the hype in his Mississippi State debut — he exceeded it.

For the first time since 2014, which was the season Dak Prescott led Mississippi State to a No. 1 ranking, the Bulldogs won in Baton Rouge on Saturday.

Mississippi State beat LSU 44-34 to open the season 1-0.

As if that result wasn’t impressive enough, Mississippi State quarterback K.J. Costello passed for 623 yards and five touchdowns in the game. Costello set the all-time SEC single-game passing record in the win.

Following Mississippi State’s big win, Leach was given a game ball inside the visitors’ locker room inside Tiger Stadium.
