The NCAA has announced a significant change to its existing transfer portal windows.

Beginning for the 2024-25 academic year, the transfer portal for football players will be open for a total of 30 days (down from 45 in previous cycles). The portal will be open for 20 days after conference championship weekend and then for an additional 10-day period in the spring.

Under the previous system, the portal would stay open for 30 days following conference championship weekend and then for a 15-day period in the spring.

The transfer portal dates for the current year are Dec. 9-28 and April 16-25, the NCAA announced.

These changes were officially approved by the NCAA Division I council on Tuesday.

It was previously reported that the council was considering more drastic changes to the transfer portal. Per a report from Ross Dellenger earlier this year, the NCAA considered removing the spring portal window entirely. While the council has evidently decided against doing so for 2024-25, the spring transfer window could still be eliminated in future years.

Numerous players from around college football have already declared their intentions to enter the transfer portal when it officially opens on Dec. 9.
