The biggest individual name when it comes to college football preview magazines has revealed his official predictions as Phil Steele is ready to announce who he has playing in the upcoming College Football Playoff.

During a recent appearance on Birmingham-based WJOX 94.5 FM radio program “3 Man Front,” Phil Steele shared his preseason thoughts on the leading contenders to win it all next college football season.

Here are Steele’s official CFP picks: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Michigan and No. 4 Georgia.

During his appearance on the show, Steele was asked what pushed the Crimson Tide over Dabo Swinney’s Tigers looking ahead to the 2019 season.

“I’m going with the overall defense,” Steele answered on the show. “I know the defense didn’t look good in the last outing that Alabama was in, got shredded for some 482 yards by Clemson, 475 yards by Oklahoma, 440 yards by Georgia but six returning starters, last year’s secondary was very inexperienced. This year, they are more experience. Clemson, meanwhile, defensively does lose four huge guys off that defensive line. All to the NFL, all in the early rounds.”

As for Michigan and Georgia, Steele could see both of them finishing the regular season undefeated.

“I think those two are capable of running the table but Utah is my No. 1 surprise team, we’ll see if it works out for them,” Steele added.

Presumably, in this scenario, Alabama and Georgia both go undefeated in the regular season with the Tide winning in Atlanta once again, leaving a one-loss SEC East Georgia to fill the final spot in the College Football Playoff. If that’s what happens, there’s no doubt the talking heads at ESPN will have a field day discussing that decision for days and possibly weeks.
