Portland State coach Bruce Barnum had a gesture that went viral recently. He proposed buying beer for any fans who came to his team’s game against Western Oregon.

Portland State QB Davis Alexander passed for a pair of touchdown passes in the win over Division II Western Oregon 21-7 on Saturday. But the more popular news was that Barnum paid for 2,064 beers at a cost of $14,448.

For some perspective, the idea was announced on a local podcast that he would buy fans’ beer “for the entire game” and added, “I’m not buying your ticket, but I’ll buy your beer,” Barnum told John Canzano on the BFT Podcast. When asked how many beers he’d be willing to buy, the 57-year-old head coach said “all of them.”

All fans had to say was “I heard Barney on the BFT.”

Of course, when Barnum posted the receipt to social media, plenty of fans showed their appreciation and respect for the gesture, and hoped that fans would return for more games this season.
