Based on the only barometer that should count — on-field results — the SEC is the best conference in college football. As a matter of fact, the SEC has a winning record against the ACC, Big 12, Big Ten and Pac-12.

Now thanks to a rule that becomes official this season, each SEC team will have to play at least one team from the other Power 5 conferences every year.

That’s a terrific development in light of the fact that the SEC – despite existing since 1933 — doesn’t have an extensive history against most of those Power 5 leagues. Two notable exceptions are traditional SEC-ACC rivalry games between Florida-Florida State, Georgia-Georgia Tech and South Carolina-Clemson, plus the annual docket of SEC-Big Ten bowl games.

The SEC and Pac-12 rarely – if ever – face each other outside of bowl season. The scheduling rule may change that – Alabama and USC open the 2016 season with a neutral-site game.

The rule may also reduce the bad blood between the SEC and the Big 12, or at the very least encourage the two conferences to schedule more games between them.

Here’s a look at the SEC’s all-time record against every major conference, according to mcubed.net. (Click on the links for an entire game-by-game breakdown by conference).

SEC vs. Power 5 by winning pct.

.663 (vs. ACC)
.627 (vs. Pac-12)
.599 (vs. Big Ten)
.553 (vs. Big 12)

vs. ACC

Despite Auburn’s loss to Florida State in the 2013 BCS National Championship Game, and the ACC’s 5-3 record in 2014 matchups, the SEC still holds a huge edge in the 2010s thanks to a combined 18-8 record against the conference from 2011-13.

vs. Big 12

The SEC hasn’t posted a losing record against the Big 12 since ’02, when Alabama lost to Oklahoma and Ole Miss lost to Texas Tech. Even though the average score in the 2010s is close (32.5-28), the SEC is 16-8 against the Big 12 so far this decade.

vs. Big Ten

The SEC is on pace for its most lopsided decade against any one conference, beating the Big Ten by an average score of 31.3 to 21.8. The SEC finished 4-1 against the Big Ten last season, including Alabama’s 38-0 victory over Michigan State in the Cotton Bowl.

vs. Pac-12

Since 2010, the SEC has faced Pac-12 teams just eight times. The conference’s biggest victory was Auburn’s 22-19 win over Oregon in the 2010 BCS National Championship Game.
