The SEC will have a high-profile opening in its league office ahead of the 2020-21 men’s basketball season.

According to a release from the conference on Tuesday, Mark Whitehead, who has served as the SEC’s coordinator of men’s basketball officials since 2016, has resigned.

Commissioner Greg Sankey issued a statement thanking Whitehead for his service the past 4 seasons:

“I appreciate Mark’s work and his investment of time and effort the last four seasons to improve the SEC officiating program,” Sankey said. “He was tireless in his dedication to the position and we will miss his enthusiasm for the sport of basketball that brought our officiating program to a new level.”

Whitehead previously worked as an official in the SEC, Pac-12, Big 12, Big Ten and several other conferences.

Sankey said the search for Whitehead’s replacement has begun.
