Today is Selection Monday for the NCAA Tournament.

There won’t be any drama for Arkansas, which spent the bulk of the season ranked No. 1 in Baseball America’s Top 25 poll and just won the SEC Tournament.

There won’t any for Tennessee, which won the SEC East and finished second in the SEC Tournament, or Vanderbilt, which won the 2019 College World Series. Those are 3 of the 7 SEC teams selected to host a regional.

We’ll find out soon enough how many more SEC teams will be selected (BA has projected as many as 10 to make the field) and who they will be playing. The show begins at noon, ET, on ESPN2.

What we already know is every SEC team’s NCAA Tournament history. (Combined, current SEC teams have won 13 College World Series titles.) That’s worth noting on a day when perhaps most of the league will get another shot to make history or add to a championship legacy.

By team, here is a look at each program’s best NCAA Tournament performance.

Alabama

The Tide were NCAA Tournament regulars — 24 appearances — but they’ve hit a wall this century. They haven’t advanced to the College World Series since 1999.

They’ve finished 2nd twice in program history, in 1983 and 1997.

They entered the SEC Tournament on the outside looking in but upset Tennessee once before being eliminated. How important was that victory? Baseball America projected the Tide to make the field.

Arkansas

The Hogs will make their 31st NCAA Tournament appearance, and outside of Vanderbilt, you could build a solid argument that they’ve been the SEC’s second-best program over the past decade.

Arkansas is still searching for that elusive College World Series title, but the Hogs were runners-up in 2018 and 1979 (before they joined the SEC). They’ve been to Omaha 10 times — including 4 times in the past 8 tournaments — and are strong contenders to add to that number this year.

Auburn

No, the Tigers never made it to Omaha with Bo Jackson and Frank Thomas.

But they know their way around Omaha. They’ve been there 5 times, most recently in 2019. Their best finish was 4th-place in 1967.

The Tigers won’t have a chance this season. They lost their SEC Tournament opener and finished 25-27.

Florida

The Gators were national runners-up twice before breaking through with their first CWS title in 2017.

Florida dropped just 1 game in Omaha that season and swept LSU 4-3 and 6-1 in the best-of-3 final to earn the crown.

They opened this season No. 1 in Baseball America’s poll but quickly fell before putting it together in Hoover. They also will host a regional and have the talent to make a run.

Georgia

Did you know the Dawgs have won a College World Series title more recently than a football national championship?

The Dawgs won the 1990 CWS, going 4-0 in the process.

They entered the SEC Tournament firmly on the bubble and went 1-2. Baseball America still projected the Dawgs to make the field, though, a testament to the SEC’s overall strength.

Kentucky

The Cats have produced some quality major leaguers (Joe Blanton and Jim Leyritz have World Series rings and career-defining highlights), but they haven’t had a ton of college success.

Kentucky has made it to the Super Regional just 1 time — in 2017, and promptly went 0-2.

These Cats lost their opening game of the SEC Tournament and aren’t projected to make the field.

LSU

LSU set the SEC standard for college baseball excellence.

The Tigers have won 6 College World Series titles. Vandy has surpassed the Tigers, but until Tim Corbin built the Nashville-to-Omaha turnpike, nobody came close to matching LSU’s legacy.

LSU’s most recent CWS crown came in 2009, but there’s no question about its most famous title. That came in 1996, when Warren Morris rocked Miami with a game-winning 2-run homer in the bottom of the 9th. Did you know that was Morris’ only home run that season?

Mississippi State

You say Thunder, I say Lightning.

Here’s an interesting thing about the Rafael Palmeiro-Will Clark tandem — arguably the greatest in college baseball history: Together, they only got to Omaha once — in 1985, when they finished 3rd. Many college baseball analysts put that ’85 team, which also included future MLB relievers Bobby Thigpen and Jeff Brantley, in the discussion as the best to never win a CWS title.

Far less celebrated MSU teams reached Omaha in consecutive years — in 1997-98, and 2018-19.

MSU’s best finish came in 2013, when they lost to UCLA in the CWS final.

This year’s team had a sudden and surprising exit from the SEC Tournament, but they were selected to host a regional and, Hoover aside, typically pitch well enough to win tight games.

Missouri

Missouri hasn’t made much noise as an SEC member — it didn’t even qualify for this year’s SEC Tournament — but the Tigers were a force in the 1960s.

All 6 of their CWS appearances came in a 13-year span from 1952-64 — highlighted by their 1954 national championship.

They haven’t been back to the NCAA Tournament since 2012.

Ole Miss

What if I told you the Rebels have only been to the College World Series 1 time in the past 49 years? That happened in 2014, when they finished 3rd, matching the program high.

Can these Rebels get back to Omaha?

They spent part of the season ranked No. 1 in the country and are projected to host a regional.

South Carolina

Two SEC programs have repeated as College World Series champions.

LSU did it in 1996 and 1997.

The other? It’s obviously South Carolina, which followed the program’s first CWS title in 2010 with another in 2011. No other team has repeated since.

South Carolina lost its opening game of the SEC Tournament but still earned the right to host a regional.

Tennessee

The Vols lost the 1951 CWS title game to Oklahoma, their best effort to date in Omaha.

But let’s take a minute to remember the 1995 team.

Todd Helton, who spent the fall of 1994 sharing QB duties with a freshman named Peyton Manning, was the Vols’ baseball star. Some media outlets voted him the national Player of the Year. He was a finalist for the prestigious Golden Spikes Award, which is amateur baseball’s version of the Heisman.

Helton also was a 2-time All-American, and he teamed with R.A. Dickey to lead the Vols to their first CWS appearance since 1951. They lost twice to Cal State-Fullerton, which won the national title.

Texas A&M

Aggies baseball is similar to Aggies football: There have been some good times, but more often than not, they’re playing catch-up with programs in their own state.

A&M has been to Omaha 6 times, most recently in 2017, but it has only won 2 combined games. The Aggies’ last CWS victory came in 1993, when they matched a program-best by finishing tied for 5th.

Vanderbilt

The Vandy Boys are Nick Saban’s only challenger in a “Program of the Decade” debate.

Vandy has been to the College World Series 4 times in the past 9 years the event was held.

The Vandy Boys very nearly won back-to-back titles, too, falling in the championship series in 2015 after winning their first CWS title in 2014.

Vandy matched that title by winning again in 2019, with a couple of stars who will anchor the 2021 quest.

At the top of that list, of course, is Kumar Rocker, who threw a no-hitter with 19 strikeouts in a Super Regional game as a freshman.

The ‘Dores didn’t get a chance to repeat in 2020, but they’ll enter this tournament as a host and with the top 2 pitchers in the game — and maybe the best set of college teammates to ever take the mound.
