SMU favored in betting markets to make College Football Playoff over Alabama
SMU is the betting favorite to reach the College Football Playoff over Alabama.
The Mustangs ended the night as roughly -330 favorites to make the CFP at most sports betting apps. However, as of Sunday morning, that price is climbing. At FanDuel, SMU is -1000 to reach the CFP as of publication.
SMU looked to be headed for a long night in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson on Saturday night. The Tigers took a 14-point lead with 10:47 left in the first quarter and they didn’t relinquish their double-digit lead until an SMU field goal cut the deficit to 7 with 6:56 left in the contest.
SMU ultimately tied the game in the final minute of the game before Clemson was able to make a 56-yard field goal to win it at the buzzer. Without that late charge, it’s possible SMU would have fallen out of the CFP altogether.
If the betting markets are accurate, it means just 3 teams from the SEC will reach the College Football Playoff in Year 1 of the 12-team era: Georgia, Texas and Tennessee. The Big Ten is expected to get 4 teams in while the ACC would have 2 in this scenario. The Big 12 (1), Mountain West (1) and Notre Dame are responsible for the other projected berths.
The final CFP rankings will be revealed at 12 p.m. ET on ESPN.
