Steve Spurrier has some bad news for Florida State fans: Bob Stoops isn’t interested in coaching the Seminoles.

According to what Spurrier told Orlando Sentinel columnist Mike Bianchi, it’s not just about the FSU job for Stoops:

Spurrier, a close friend and confidante of Stoops, told me Friday that Stoops “has told FSU he’s not interested in coaching college ball” and is committed to coaching the Dallas franchise in the newly formed XFL.

After Stoops stepped down at Oklahoma to retire in 2017, he became one of those names (Urban Meyer being another) that fans mention when their team fires its head coach, for obvious reasons. Insiders on Noles message boards and #FSUTwitter, as well as members of the local media in Tallahassee, identified Stoops as the top target and reported he was in negotiations for the Florida State job after Willie Taggart was fired.

Cold water has been poured on the Stoops-to-FSU rumors multiple times this month. In the early stage of the rumors, Kirk Herbstreit tweeted that Stoops told him personally “he’s not a candidate” in regards to the Seminoles job.

Stoops then got FSU fans’ hopes up when he told a Texas radio station “you never know” when asked about returning to college football. Not long after that interview, however, Jim Henry of the Tallahassee Democrat reported Stoops was not a candidate for the job. Some self-proclaimed FSU insiders have argued that the reports are simply smoke screens.

Stoops, who coached with Spurrier as Florida’s defensive coordinator before leaving for Oklahoma, has previously been linked to Auburn (if Gus Malzahn were to be dismissed) and has, unsurprisingly, shown up on some Arkansas’ fans tweeted wishlists.
