During Oklahoma’s big win over Kansas (who hasn’t beaten Kansas by several touchdowns this year?), Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield made an inappropriate gesture toward the Jayhawks’ sideline.

Though the Sooners won the game 41-3, the gesture was still on everyone’s mind after the game, so Mayfield decided to apologize.

The probable Heisman front-runner said he was sorry for the gesture and added that it wasn’t the sort of message he wanted to send to the fans watching his performance. In the video below, he called the gesture “unacceptable” and said he doesn’t want it to overshadow Oklahoma’s big win:

“I am a competitive player, but what I did was unacceptable,” he said. “I apologize. It’s disrespectful and not the example I want to set. It’s not the legacy I want to leave at OU. I truly do apologize. Thinking about the kids who are watching, it’s not something I want to do.

“I’ve always been a team guy, so actions like that don’t reveal how I feel about the team.”

It’s sports, so Mayfield is allowed to be competitive. Was his gesture inappropriate? Yes, but he also shouldn’t be forced to apologize every time he does something questionable.

Perhaps the cameras should simply cut away from Mayfield after emotional touchdowns.
