Columbia, S.C. police officials stated Wednesday that it was staff members of a Five Points bar who identified the three men involved in an assault early Saturday morning as Deebo Samuel, Skai Moore and Jalen Dread.

“The information came from business staff,” Jennifer Timmons, a Columbia police spokeswoman, told The State’s Teddy Kulmala. “CPD continues to investigate to corroborate or dispel the initial reported information.””

The three were named in the initial police report in the story reported Tuesday by The State. South Carolina coach Will Muschamp called it “irresponsible journalism” to include Samuel in the report, and apparently has an issue to take up with Five Points Saloon staff members.

“We’re still kind of gathering the facts. I’ve been out of town, so been out of pocket,” Muschamp said. “I really don’t have any other comment other than I have talked to Deebo Samuel and he was not at the establishment. It’s an incorrect report and some irresponsible journalism in my opinion, but it is what it is.”

While Dread is a former player, Moore and Samuel are both active Gamecocks and key contributors. Moore missed the 2016 season due to a neck injury, but was one of South Carolina’s leading defenders in 2015. Samuel emerged last season as a top target for USC QB Jake Bentley and a threat in the return game.

The report states that the alleged assault was over the victim’s phone being knocked out of his hand. The three were reportedly agitated by the accusation, and the situation quickly escalated. The police report notes that the victim refused medical treatment despite visible swelling around his left eye.

CPD says video from the establishment only shows “a large crowd” around the incident, per Kulmala.
