Ex-South Carolina staffer set to oversee Houston Texans front office after Bill O'Brien's firing
A former staff member within the South Carolina athletic department is now overseeing the entire operation of the Houston Texans.
Texans head coach Bill O’Brien was fired after 7 seasons on Monday after an 0-4 start to the year, becoming the first NFL coach of 2020 to be shown the door. O’Brien was also the general manager, getting negative reviews for a trade that sent top receiver DeAndre Hopkins to the Arizona Cardinals.
With the vacancy in that position, the Texans will now turn to executive vice president of football operations Jack Easterby to oversee the team, including who will be its next head coach. If the name sounds familiar to South Carolina fans, it should.
Easterby was a former member of the South Carolina athletics staff, being brought on as a “character coach” in a position he served in for around 5 years. Part of his role was overseeing the spiritual formation of the university’s student-athletes.
He joined the Texans in 2019 after a period with the New England Patriots, where he worked beginning in 2013.
