Will Muschamp replaced Ellis Johnson as Auburn’s defensive coordinator in 2015. Now, a year later, Johnson will work for Muschamp.

Ellis Johnson has a wealth of experience coaching in the Carolinas, including stints at Clemson, East Carolina, Appalachian State, The Citadel and, of course, South Carolina. Johnson served on Steve Spurrier’s staff there from 2008-11.

According to Tony Morrell of 247sports, Johnson will reportedly join Muschamp’s staff in a role to be determined.

Muschamp was hired to replace Johnson as defensive coordinator at Auburn after Johnson left to be the head coach at Southern Mississippi in 2012. However, Johnson went an abysmal 0-12, the school’s first winless season since 1925 (0-7) before being fired after one season.

Johnson also has plenty of experience in the SEC, not just the Carolinas. Johnson spent a total of eight years as an assistant at Alabama while coaching four years at Mississippi State.

As for the rest of the staff, former interim coach Shawn Elliott was retained by Muschamp and will return to his role as offensive line coach.

On Tuesday, Auburn defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson confirmed via Twitter that he’ll be following Muschamp to be his defensive coordinator in Columbia.
