South Carolina needed some more depth in its defensive secondary, and it appears help is on the way in the form of a commitment from former Georgia Southern cornerback David Spaulding.

Spaulding tweeted his plans on Thursday as the Gamecocks look to replace the likes of Jaycee Horn and Israel Mukuamu and several other contributors to the 2020 defense. The other recent departures include Jackson State transfer Shilo Sanders, and Jammie Robinson and John Dixon through the transfer portal, with Dixon’s announcement that he would play at Penn State.

Spaulding joins a secondary that includes the likes of Jaylin Dickerson, Cam Smith, Jaylan Foster and Joey Hunter.

Spaulding, a redshirt freshman in 2020, played in eight games, including some on special teams as he recorded seven tackles on the season along with a pass break up and an interception. His biggest play may have been when he took an interception 28 yards for a touchdown for the opening score against App State, and finished with four tackles in the game.

Spaulding is from Riceboro, Georgia and is listed at 6-foot-2 and 185 pounds. Coming out of high school, Spaulding was rated as the No. 86 cornerback in the country and the No. 90 player in the state of Georgia by 247Sports.
