Shawn Elliott is reportedly returning to South Carolina.

According to reports from FootballScoop and others, Elliott has resigned from his position as Georgia State’s head coach. Elliott is reportedly returning to South Carolina as an offensive assistant coach. Elliott was previously a Gamecock assistant from 2010-to-2016, serving as interim head coach following Steve Spurrier’s resignation in 2015.

At Georgia State, Elliott was head coach for seven seasons. He posted a 41-44 record, including five winning seasons with four bowl victories. The Panthers are coming off a 7-6 season in 2023, capped by a win in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Georgia State began 2024 spring practice earlier this week.

Elliott, 50, started coaching at App State, his alma mater, in 1997. He arrived at South Carolina ahead of the 2010 season, serving as offensive line coach and run game coordinator under Spurrier. Ahead of the 2012 season, Spurrier promoted Elliott to co-offensive coordinator. Elliott served as interim head coach during the 2015 season when Spurrier stepped away.

As South Carolina’s interim head coach, Elliott had a 1-5 record. He opted to return to his role as offensive line coach when Will Muschamp landed the head coaching job. After a season on Muschamp’s staff, Elliott took the Georgia State job.

Elliott is the latest FBS head coach to leave for an assistant opportunity. Recently, Chip Kelly resigned from UCLA to take the Ohio State offensive coordinator job. Last month, Jeff Hafley departed Boston College to become the Green Bay Packers’ defensive coordinator. Alabama hired head coaches Kane Wommack (South Alabama) and Maurice Linguist (Buffalo) to Kalen DeBoer’s staff.
