Murphy, out of St. Thomas Aquinas in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, joined South Carolina in 2019, playing 1 game and taking a redshirt that season. In 2020, he played in 2 games as a redshirt freshman. This past season, he appeared in 8 games, receiving playing time at center and guard.
Murphy entered the transfer portal on Dec. 13, noting he would have 3 years of eligibility. Murphy can play 3 more seasons by using his extra year awarded by the NCAA. Due to the pandemic, the NCAA did not count the 2020 season against players’ 4 full seasons of eligibility.
