Manny Diaz’s first year running the Miami program was a disappointment but the head coach of the Hurricanes likely just won back a ton of support with his latest move.

Ed Reed is returning to Miami. The former Hurricane All-American and NFL Hall of Famer has been hired as Miami’s Chief of Staff, the school announced the news on Thursday.

Here’s an outline of Reed’s responsibilities, according to Miami:

As Chief of Staff, Reed will serve in an advisory role to Diaz in all aspects of the football program, including strategic planning, quality control, operations, player evaluation and player development. Reed will also provide assistance in team building, student-athlete mentorship and recruiting, as permissible under NCAA rules.

“We are thrilled to welcome Ed back to Coral Gables,” Diaz said in a released statement. “He is not only one of the most decorated players in Miami football history but also a devoted Cane who cares deeply about this program. All of our players, coaches and staff will be fortunate to tap into his experience, knowledge and passion on a regular basis.”

Reed was twice named an All-American at Miami and won 2001 Co-Big East Defensive Player of the Year before moving on to the Baltimore Ravens after being selected in the first round of the 2002 NFL Draft. He won a Super Bowl with the Ravens, was named 2004 NFL Defensive Player of the Year and was named All-Pro six times during his time with the Ravens.

The former Miami standout served as one of the head coaches of the 2020 Under Armour All-American Game, which likely played a role in his desire to get into working with college athletes.
