NC State defensive coordinator Tony Gibson is leaving Raleigh to take the head coaching position at Marshall, according to a report from Football Scoop’s John Brice.

An announcement from the Thundering Herd is expected to come down later this weekend. Marshall is playing in the Sun Belt Championship Game against Louisiana on Saturday. Current head coach Charles Huff is reportedly leaving to take the head job at Southern Miss.

Huff is in the final year of his contract. In 4 years with the program, he has a 31-20 record (not including Saturday’s conference championship game) and has qualified for bowl games in all 4 years.

Gibson is widely regarded as one of the top defensive minds in college football. He has been with the Wolfpack since the start of the 2019 season. He has been the defensive play-caller since 2020 and has also coached linebackers throughout his time with the program.

According to USA Today’s coaching database, Gibson made $1.3 million this season, putting him among the top 30 assistant coaches in the country.

NC State ranked in the top 25 for defensive efficiency in 2021 and 2022. It ranked in the top 25 for scoring defense in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

This season, the defense collapsed. NC State gave up 30 points a game, a mark that ranked 102nd nationally going into conference championship weekend.

However, the Wolfpack won their final game of the year over North Carolina on the road to get to 6-6 and make a bowl game.
