Only days away from its season opener, Texas A&M has settled on a winner, at least for now, in the preseason quarterback competition.

The Aggies open with Northwestern State at 8:30 p.m. ET on Thursday on the SEC Network.

After a weeks-long competition, GigEm247 has reported that Kellen Mond beat out Nick Starkel for the starting role. The web site reported that Mond received first-team reps over the weekend, and both players have been told the news.

Coach Jimbo Fisher has maintained that both quarterbacks could play multiple games into the season as they look to maximize Starkel’s passing and Mond’s running strengths.

Starkel won the job a year ago, but was injured in the season opener against UCLA, while Mond took over and had an inconsistent season. Starkel returned to the starting role and passed for nearly 500 yards in the Belk Bowl.
