Tennessee has now lost a standout defensive player from its 2021 recruiting class.

On Thursday, 3-star safety Jay Jones announced on Twitter that he has decommitted from the Vols. Jones, who attends Demopolis (Ala.) High School, is a 6-foot-1, 200-pounder who ranks as the No. 892 overall recruit in the 2021 class, per the 247Sports Composite rankings.

Jones had been committed to Tennessee since July 4, 2019. He also held offers from Arkansas, Ole Miss and South Alabama.

The Vols still have 23 commits in their 2021 class, including 10 4-star recruits. They currently rank No. 14 in the country (No. 5 in the SEC) in the 24Sports class rankings. However, they have had five 2021 recruits decommit since Nov. 26.

Jones wasn’t the first recruit to decommit on Thursday, either, as the Vols lost a pledge from 4-star tight end Hudson Wolfe earlier in the day.

Tennessee is currently having with a tough stretch on the field, too. After winning their first two games of the 2020 season, the Vols have lost six straight. They have two regular-season games remaining — Saturday at Vanderbilt and Dec. 19 vs. Texas A&M.
