Tennessee is still looking for its first SEC win of the season as the Volunteers get set to take on Alabama.

The traditional rivalry game used to be a hard-fought contest, but it is not likely to be a close game this season. The opening betting line for Saturday had Alabama has a 34-point favorite over Tennessee making it the largest in the history of the series.

The Vols have certainly looked lifeless in their last two games as they lost to Georgia and South Carolina by a combined score of 56-9. The offense did not score a touchdown in either game and was shutout at home by the Bulldogs.

Former Vols QB Erik Ainge made an appearance on The Opening Drive Tuesday to discuss the program and the upcoming matchup with Alabama. He believes the betting line speaks not only to how far the Vols have fallen but also to how good Alabama has been this season:

“It’s as much about how good Alabama is,” said Ainge. “They’re really good at football.”

Ainge went on to say that Tennessee has not beaten Alabama in so long that it is hard to tell if Alabama even thinks it is still a rivalry game:

“I don’t think they thinks it’s a rivalry,” said Ainge. “I was 20-years old the last time we beat Alabama.”

It has been a rough time for Tennessee fans in the rivalry. The last time the Vols knocked off Alabama was in 2006 and the last win in Tuscaloosa came in 2003.

Ainge did discuss head coach Butch Jones being on the hot seat, and he said that the results just haven’t been good enough under Jones. Ainge said he does not expect Jones to return to Knoxville after this season. He believes one of Jones’ biggest issues is that he never learned to identify with the fans in Knoxville.

Saturday’s kickoff is set for 3:30 pm EST on CBS.
