Greg McElroy put out there what many have wondered since the news emerged about the NCAA investigation of Tennessee for its alleged NIL violations.

McElroy and co-host Cole Cubelic addressed the issue on the latest episode of “McElroy and Cubelic In the morning” on WJOX.

“The perception is going to be bad, there’s no getting around that, perception is going to be tough,” McElroy said. “But at the same time, though, are they doing anything differently than anyone else is what I need to know. Are they doing it differently than anybody else? Until you can prove to me that they had done something that was above and beyond what everybody else is doing, then it’s difficult for me to go out and try to rule with an iron fist.”

McElroy recalled that he has said for a long time with NIL that teams and fans need to be careful casting stones. The possibility of another school doing something similar are very real, he said.

“The NIL’s sketchy, we have no guard rails and it’s not going to change,” he said. “So one thing that would be real ideal would be to try to figure out a way to enforce things, where everybody has the same rules and the same access to revenues that they are currently paying out in NIL.”

Cubelic pointed out that because of the NCAA’s weakness for enforcement, he doesn’t think it will be a “massive problem” for Tennessee.

“I do not think there’s going to be a big problem,” Cubelic said. “Could they work out some sort of meeting in the middle at some point to say, ‘OK, we did this and shouldn’t have,’ maybe, possibly, but I just don’t know how the NCAA could rule with an iron fist right now with the amount of gray area that lives within collegiate athletics.”
