Josh Heupel discusses timeline for hiring his Tennessee staff, if Kevin Steele could return
Love the hire or hate it, Josh Heupel has been hired by Tennessee and is bringing one of the most exciting offenses in the country with him.
The big question now on Rocky Top surrounds the defense the Volunteers plan to run and the 10 assistant coach hires Heupel plans to make.
Tennessee currently has several coaches currently on staff, but it remains unclear if any of them will be returning in 2021 with Heupel running the program.
During his introductory press conference on Wednesday, Heupel was asked about the timeline for hiring his first Tennessee staff — including whether any assistants from UCF will follow him or not.
“We will consider staff members from Central Florida. We will do that, also, current members of this staff,” Heupel answered. “We’ll have a conversation with them here at Tennessee.
“It’s important we put together a staff at the right time, that we get the right people more than it is the urgency of putting that staff together. But yes, we do want to do it in a timely fashion.”
When asked specifically if Kevin Steele would be retained, Heupel left the door open for that but would not commit one way or another.
“I will have a conversation with everyone on the staff,” the new Tennessee coach said.

Need to work on filling out those pants a little less…
So now if they don’t keep Steele they’ll have to PAY HIM?? That would probably be another 3 or 4 Million added to the reported 6 million to buy the UCF AD&HC! Pretty soon paying that $12 million to Pruitt will look like a good deal. Wonder how much those hot shot lawyers cost them? What a mess – makes our $13 million to resolve the Muschamp mess look reasonable!
His UT payout shouldn’t be more than $1M UNLESS he got a boost when he became interim.
His buyout with AU is $5M less mitigation.
Lot of coaches getting rich this year on buyouts.Disgusting!!!
You got that right. I wish getting fired was as lucrative for me as it has been for a bunch of them recently.
Depends on if he signed the contract, and what the contract was for. Alabama got out of paying Mike price anything because he had not signed the contract, they only had an offer and agreement. Of course if he HAD signed the contract, I think that they would have had cause LOL.
