Josh Dobbs to Jauan Jennings. Tennessee fans will remember that wild Hail Mary for generations to come, as it helped the Vols beat rival Georgia in 2016.

However, according to former Tennessee WR Josh Smith, the play was intended to go to TE Jason Croom, not Jennings.

On the 5Star Podcast with host Jesse Smithey, Smith explained how Jennings abandoned his responsibilities on the play and went rogue, making one of the biggest catches in recent Tennessee history (via 247Sports):

“Honestly, it was just really crazy,” Smith said. “We were in the huddle, and then they switched Jauan and Josh Malone. Coach Z [Zach Azzanni] did. They were in different positions at first, but they switched them to opposite sides. It was just crazy how it all worked out. We just had 11 guys who all really believed, ‘We can do this.’ It was just an unreal moment.

“I was the ‘crumber,’ as they call it, where you face the guy that’s gonna jump up, and then you have kind of like the goal-line but in the end zone. I did my job, but Jauan did not do his job. He was supposed to be the ‘crumber’ in the back. Jason Croom was supposed to jump up there and get it, but Jauan being Jauan, he was like, ‘Screw it, I’m just gonna jump up there and get it.’

“And that’s what he did.”

Great players make great plays, and that’s what Jennings did. He could have waited for a rebound, but instead, he used his immense athleticism to go up and make an incredible catch.

The play will live on for years in the minds of Vols fans, and it’s clear Smith is still amazed by his teammate.
